The Board will award prorated credit for part-time work. Please Note: Experience obtained in any work setting as a consultant or contract worker is generally not given any credit towards the experience requirement for licensure in New York State. If you have experience as a consultant or contract worker, please have your supervisor submit a letter to the State Board for Architecture outlining your role and responsibilities on projects and how the experience gained was lawful in nature.

Maximum credit granted: 12 units. If your experience to be considered in Category I occurred while working for an architectural firm located in New York or for an out of state entity offering architectural services in New York, please be advised that only certain entities that have current filings may lawfully offer architectural services in New York.

These include:. With few exceptions, these are the only entities authorized to provide, or offer to provide, architectural services in New York. Please see this document for more detail on permissible corporate entities. Please note that the documentation supplied to the State Education Department for the purpose of early admission to the ARE may be unofficial or in summary form. The Department will make final determinations related to the granting of an architectural license upon submission of official documentation, including, but not limited to, education, experience, and examination documentation.

Finally, candidates will have to document acceptable supervised experience following their education. The amount of experience required is dependent upon the nature of the education. Candidates should have their supervisor submit a fully executed Applicant Experience Form Form 4 for each period of experience they wish the Board to consider.

Please note that a certain proportion of the overall experience required must have been obtained under the direct supervision of a lawfully practicing architect in a diversified setting. Candidates must submit a transcript for an informal and preliminary review of their educational credentials in order to determine their eligibility for the ARE.

Non-US candidates must submit a transcript, diploma, and translated copies of both for an informal and preliminary review of their educational credentials in order to determine their eligibility for the ARE. Foreign candidates will undergo a formal review by the Department's Bureau of Comparative Education at a later date.

All foreign candidates are encouraged to begin the process of education review with our Bureau of Comparative Education as soon as possible. The New York State Education Department determines your eligibility based on the education and experience guidelines listed above.

You will be notified in writing of your eligibility by the State Board for Architecture. See the NCARB website for more information on dates, deadlines and fees, as well as how to retake exam divisions. The program consists of 3, hours spread over six experience areas.

That previous exam application will serve also as your initial license application. The application packet provides a wealth of information regarding the application process, including links to Minnesota rules and statutes and relevant associated websites such as NCARB. We encourage you to thoroughly review the instructions and the form. If you did not specify Minnesota as your jurisdiction when you first established your NCARB Record, you must do so prior to applying to the Board for licensure.

Your NCARB Record includes your official transcripts or, if applicable, your education evaluation and your examination and experience information. It is a required part of the application process. You may apply for licensure at any time after you have completed the education, experience and examination requirements summarized above. Applications are reviewed on Board meeting days, which occur approximately eight times per year see calendar.

If your application is approved, the Board will inform you by letter. You must return a copy of that letter and the licensing fee in order to obtain your professional license. Note: You are not licensed and cannot practice or hold out as licensed until the Board processes your license and issues your license number.
